INSPIRATION
I was born in Mijdrecht. As a child I played a lot outside in nature, but also on the grounds of my grandfather who had a demolition and steel company. The company specialized in making industrial bodies and containers. There I played a lot in the large warehouse with stored Cortez steel beams, pipes, barrels and a lot of demolition material from old houses, factories and also from a station in the village. I like the direct geometric shapes of steel pipes, chains, iron bars, barrels, wheels, tires and so on. My fascination also lies with the architecture of factory buildings. The high pipes, the lines. The surface division.
My work
The work is 2-dimensional and consists of geometric shapes and objects such as circles, ovals, lines, tubes & spheres. These shapes can be open or closed, industrial or organic. The work is rhythmic, modest and has an expressive or graphic character. I work with acrylic and oil paint, but usually the first layer is acrylic or watercolor. While painting I look for contrasts: the use of color is from sober to very colorful, the paint can be opaque or very transparent, glossy or matte. But also soft lines compared to clear sleek shapes. The size is small to medium.
METHOD
I make sketches on paper in advance, or use my own photos of various abstract shapes and tubes. I cut out pictures from magazines with certain patterns, rhythms. With these ingredients I make a composition and determine the use of color. Then I start on MDF or canvas with the 1st layer. Then a 2nd layer. What happens if you apply a transparent layer over a thick layer of paint. What is the effect of colors next to or over each other. Sometimes beautiful shapes and residual shapes happen to arise. The use of templates ensures that the shapes remain clear and sleek. I use acrylic because it is quick-drying, oil paint as a 2nd layer because it has a beautiful color, and to easily make “smooth” movements / shapes. To blend one color into another and watercolor because it is transparent, and as contrast (thin, transparent) The recurring constants are the abstract shapes such as circles, ovals, tubes, lines). You never see a horizon in my work.
